This month, there are not one but two publications from BSSH members. The first World of Sport by Matthew Taylor was published on December 10th 2024 and explores the transnational approach to sports history, covering the periods from the mid-nineteenth century until the 1960s.

This volume offers a critical examination of the existing historiography and new insights on the subject. The book demonstrates that while sport was a national and international phenomenon, it was often constructed transnationally.  See here for order details.

Games, Greek and Pluck, by Andy Carter has only just become available and examines how classicism and athleticism were closely linked in the public school system and using various primary sources including school magazines and memoirs considers how classical ideas shaped the elite British male's view of his place in the world and his attitudes to masculinity, gender, race, class and duty. Games, Greek and Pluck is also co-edited by Richard Holt and Matthew Taylor.  For order details on this book see here.
