The British Society of Sports History is pleased to announce that Finlay Wilkes of Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur has won the 2024 Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Prize. Finlay's EPQ title was "Politics, Profits or Power: Is sportswashing just a modern approach to sports diplomacy, or does it take the influence of politics in sport to a new and damaging level?"
Judges praised Finlay's work for the well written essay which cleverly considers the historical aspects of a contemporary issue and connects sportswashing with sports diplomacy. There was also praise for the impressive analysis and comments on the use of elite sport for political gain.
